Tips for Reading Aloud

Students who are struggling with their reading skills may not be excited by the idea of reading aloud. If this is the case with your child, there are some simple steps you can take to help them improve their reading skills and master reading aloud.

Practice Makes Perfect

Just like with everything in life, practicing reading will only make it easier. Reading with your child is a great way to help them develop their reading skills while also being supportive of their learning efforts. If your child is quite young, simply reading to them and having them follow along can help them develop their reading skills. You can even read aloud together so that they can practice their reading fluency without having to do it alone.

Let Your Child Practice Alone

While practicing together is great, allowing your child to practice their reading skills on their own is also a must. They may be embarrassed to read in front of people while still developing their skills, so some quiet reading time alone will allow them practice. They may also enjoy reading to a pet or their stuffed animals since they won't have to worry about feedback or corrections.

Give Your Child a Choice

Simply allowing your child to select the reading material can be enough to get them excited about reading aloud. Reading their favorite book or one that they're comfortable with can help them feel more confident and ready to read to you.
